All around the world, we use a lot of plastic. We use plastic bags to carry our shopping, we drink from plastic bottles, and we buy food in plastic packages. Plastic is very useful, but it creates a very big problem when we are finished with it. What do we do with all the old, broken plastic bags and other plastic trash?
The biggest issue is that plastic does not go away. A banana peel will rot and become part of the soil. A plastic bag will not. It can stay in the environment for hundreds of years. These old plastics break down into tiny pieces, but they never truly disappear.
This old plastic causes a lot of harm. It fills up our land and pollutes our rivers and oceans. Animals like birds, fish, and turtles can mistake plastic bags for food. When they eat the plastic, they get sick and can die. Plastic waste also makes our towns and natural places look ugly. Bags get caught in trees and fences, and bottles lie on the side of the road.
Even when we throw plastic in the trash, it goes to a big hole in the ground called a landfill. These landfills are getting full, and we are running out of space to put our garbage.
Recycling can help, but it is not a perfect solution. Not all plastic can be recycled, in fact, only a small part, and the process is often difficult and expensive. Finding a good, safe, and cheap way to manage all this used plastic is one of the biggest challenges we face today. We need to find better ideas to clean up our planet for ourselves and for the future.
We all see this problem every day. What are your simple, clever ideas for dealing with plastic bag waste?
