Many people in the world do not have enough food to eat every day. This is called a food shortage. Sometimes, the weather is bad for farming for example when there is no rain and plants cannot grow. So farmers cannot grow much food. Other times, food is too expensive for people to buy. When there is not enough food, people can become hungry and sick. It is a big problem for many people around the world. This is a serious issue that affects families and especially children.
A food shortage can happen in the entire region or in just one town or a small area. Sometimes, a problem like a flood can stop trucks from bringing food to local shops. This means the stores might run out of things like bread or milk. When this happens, some people in the community may not have enough to eat for a short time.
Even in places that usually have a lot of food, a local problem can make it hard for people to get what they need.
People can work together with their neighbors to help with food problems. A good idea is to create a small garden for the community where everyone can grow vegetables together. Growing your own food in a small garden at home can be very helpful too. When you have your own garden, you can grow vegetables for your family to eat. This means you don't have to buy as much from the store.
If you grow a lot, you can share your fresh food with your neighbors. Having many home gardens in a town helps make sure more people have enough to eat.
It is a good idea to grow many different types of plants together. This is called crop diversity. Different plants can handle different problems. For example, a long time with no rain (a drought). The drought might hurt some plants, but other plants, might be strong and do well in dry weather. The same is true for plant diseases. A sickness might harm one of them, but it may not affect another. When you have many kinds of crops, it is less risky. If one type of plant fails, you will still have others that grow strong or at least they will grow a little better and provide food.
Every garden in a neighborhood is a little bit different. Your garden might get a lot of sun, but your neighbor's garden might be more shady. The soil, can also be different from one yard to the next. Some soil is wet and dark, and some is dry and sandy. These small changes matter a lot to plants. For example, tomatoes love a lot of sun, so they will grow well in a sunny garden. But lettuce might grow better in a cooler, shady spot. One neighbor might have great carrots because their soil is perfect for them. This means that if neighbors plant a mix of things, the whole neighborhood can produce more different kinds of food.
Sometimes, your garden grows a lot of one thing. You might have too many beans, more than your family can eat. At the same time, your neighbor might have too many carrots. It is a great idea to share with each other. You can give some of your beans to your neighbor. In return, your neighbor can give you some of their carrots. Crop diversity is good for all. This is a simple way to trade. By doing this, both of you get to eat different vegetables. Your meals become more interesting and healthy. When neighbors share their food, everyone in the community benefits. Working together makes the whole neighborhood healthier and stronger.
