The plastic bag problem - what else can we do with them?

Every day, we see plastic bags. We get them at the store when we buy things. They are cheap, easy to use, but... They are a big problem for our world. But why they are bad and what better choices we can make?

Why are plastic bags bad for our environment?

Plastic bags are made to be strong and difficult to destroy. This was supposed to be, and in fact is, their main advantage. Unfortunately this also means that they do not disappear for a very, very long time. A bag you use for 10 minutes can stay on our planet for hundreds of years. It just breaks into smaller and smaller pieces, called microplastics, which get into our water and soil... And even inside our bodies.

They hurt animals. Animals in the sea and on land can make a mistake. A sea turtle can think a plastic bag is a jellyfish and eat it. Birds can get trapped in them. When animals eat plastic or get stuck in it, they get very sick and can die.

Plastic bags are made from oil. Oil is a natural resource that we are running out of. We use a lot of energy and water to make these bags that we often use only one time. So they use the resources of our planet.

They make our world messy. Too many plastic bags end up as trash on our streets, in our parks, and in our rivers and oceans. They make beautiful places look ugly and polluted.

What can we use instead?

The good news is that there are many great things we can use instead of single-use plastic bags. There are better choices for shopping. These are called reusable options because you can use them again and again.

Cloth bags. These are a fantastic choice. You can find bags made from cotton or linen. They are strong, you can wash them, and you can use them for years. Additionally, they are biodegradable - they decompose in the natural environment. Keep one in your car or backpack so you always have it.

Wicker baskets. A wicker basket is a beautiful and strong option, especially for food shopping at a local market. They are made from natural plants and can last a very long time.

Other natural containers. You can be creative! A simple backpack is perfect for carrying groceries. Some people keep a cardboard box in their car to put their shopping in. Any container you can use many times is a good choice.

Various plastic bags

What to do if you already have a lot of plastic bags?

Sometimes, we still end up with plastic bags at home. The worst thing to do is to throw them away after one use. Instead, we can give them a second life.

The simplest and most logical solution? Use them again for shopping. The easiest way to reuse a plastic bag is to take it back to the store with you next time.

For cleaning. You can use them to pick up after your pet or to hold wet or dirty things, like muddy shoes.

For storing things. They can be useful to separate items in a larger bag when you travel.

Use them as small trash bags. They can be used as liners for small trash cans in your bathroom or office.

A small change makes a Big Difference

Choosing to say "no" to a single-use plastic bag seems like a small thing. But when many people do it, it makes a huge difference. By using cloth bags, baskets, or backpacks, we help protect our animals, keep our planet clean, and save our natural resources. We can work together to make a better, cleaner world for everyone. For us and for future generations.

  1. And what if I've got broken bags. With holes or torn? How to reuse them? Is there any solution?
