Compost as an aid to improve soil and increase crops

When farmers grow crops in the same place for many years, the soil can become less healthy (less fertile). The plants take nutrients from the soil, and over time, there are fewer nutrients left. This is called soil depletion.

Also, the good, dark part of the soil, called organic matter, can decrease. This makes it harder for the soil to hold water and support new plants. So, long-term farming can make the soil tired and not as good for growing food. The harvest will become smaller over time.

A good way to help tired soil and increase crops is to use compost. Compost is like a natural food for the soil. It's easy to make from things like kitchen scraps and yard waste. When you add compost to the garden, it gives back nutrients to the soil. It also helps the soil hold more water and become healthier for growing plants.

Okay, let's talk more about the great things compost does.

Using compost has many benefits. As we said, it makes the soil much better. It adds those important nutrients that plants need to grow strong and healthy, leading to better harvests or more beautiful flowers.

But there's another big advantage: composting is a fantastic way to get rid of organic waste. Instead of throwing away things like fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, tea bags (only organic ones, not plastic), and those garden trimmings which we will talk about in a moment (like small branches and dead plants), you can turn them into something valuable. This means less trash goes to landfills, which is good for the environment.

You can make compost from many things you might otherwise throw away. A really important part of compost comes from "brown" materials. These include things like small, broken-up twigs and branches – the kind you might get after trimming bushes or trees. Dried leaves that fall in autumn are also great. Even old, inedible parts of plants from your garden, like tough stems or plants that have finished growing, can be used. It's best if these woody or tough plant parts are chopped or shredded into smaller pieces. This helps them break down faster in the compost pile. These materials add bulk and help create air pockets in the compost, which is important for the tiny creatures that do the composting work.

However, you need to be a bit careful with some food scraps. While many kitchen scraps are great for compost, things like meat, dairy products, and oily foods can attract pests like rodents (like mice or even rats) or raccoons to your compost pile. It's often best to avoid adding these, or make sure they are buried deep in the center of a hot compost pile if you do include them. Sticking mainly to plant-based scraps and yard waste is usually the safest way to avoid unwanted visitors.

Compost can be created in a composter or in a heap.

A lot could be written on this topic, but to summarize. In short, composting is a simple, low-cost way to tackle a few common problems. When soil gets tired from a lot of farming, compost can bring it back to life by adding nutrients and improving its structure, helping plants grow much better. At the same time, making compost is a great method to recycle many of our organic scraps, like plant trimmings, leaves, and some kitchen waste, instead of sending them to the landfill. So, by choosing to compost, we can improve our gardens and reduce waste in an easy and affordable way.
